Cooking up science

Home Learning

Science is all around us! And this year, science even appeared on the Miss America stage. Camille is a biochemist, pharmacy student, science nerd and now she's Miss America 2020. Join Camille in learning about science in our everyday lives - from the concentration of our coffee to the stretch of slime. Let's cook up some science and chemistry with Miss America!  Developed for students in grades 6-10.

Camille SchrierCamille Schrier is a graduate from Virginia Tech with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Biochemistry and Systems Biology, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy at Virginia Commonwealth University. A science lover for life, in June of 2019 Camille was named Miss Virginia after breaking from tradition to perform the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide as her onstage talent. On December 19, 2019, Camille earned the job of Miss America 2020, becoming the first Miss America to win the job with the help of science! One of Camille's main objectives as Miss America is to show kids that science is fun, relevant and easy to understand. Through live demonstrations with students across the county, a YouTube video science series and partnering with VPM on her Cooking Up Science with Miss America series, she has been able to fulfill her goal even during a global pandemic.
