Editorial Producer

VPM is a public media organization serving Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. The VPM News team produces award-winning journalism for our NPR station in Richmond and distribution across our digital channels to over 2 million people in VPM’s coverage area. As an independent, non-profit service, we strive to create and serve a more informed public.

VPM seeks an experienced, creative, and enthusiastic Editorial Producer to join our team of media professionals, and to lead in the creation of our forthcoming weekly television news show. The program will cover state-wide news, politics, race, business, health, the environment, science, arts, and culture, with a planned launch in early 2022. 
As a seasoned journalist or news editor with demonstrated news writer experience and an eye for innovative storytelling, the ideal candidate also possesses digital journalism experience, strong relationship-building skills and connections across the state of Virginia. 

The Editorial Producer will help manage story development with reporters and producers, and work strategically with the Senior Producer to develop a vision for the broadcast and develop short- and long-term projects. This Producer will pitch news stories, book guests for live or taped segments, conduct pre-interviews, and oversee logistics.

•    Develop coverage that distinguishes the station and connects with racially, ethnically, and politically diverse audiences, among others.
•    Manage digital storytelling across platforms.
•    Write the weekly news summary and overseeing editing.
•    Work daily with staff of editors, producers, and reporters to shape coverage.
•    Write and produce stories and ensure they are consistent with the vision, mission, goals and editorial policies of the newsroom and the station.
•    Plan weekly coverage and special reports in collaboration with Senior Producer.
•    Manage special correspondents and review scripts and rough cuts.
•    Support VPM's digital content management process and implement it within the production of the weekly TV broadcast and special projects.
•    Equitably commit to the inclusion of student learning and expanding VPM's established successful internship program.

•    5 + years of news writing and/or production experience in television news with
•    significant experience reporting, writing, and editing.
•    Deep knowledge of and commitment to the tenets, ethics of journalism and the role of journalism in society.
•    Experience writing and producing stories in multiple forms of media including broadcast, digital, and print (radio/podcasting is a plus)
•    Experience implementing innovative content on all platforms and testing new forms of audience engagement in the reporting process.
•    Commitment to enterprise, investigative, and unique reporting.
•    Demonstrated history of attention to racial and gender equity in editorial practices.
•    Understanding of and commitment to community engagement through an audience-centered approach to coverage.
•    Proven ability to consistently work well with others, with a team spirit and positive attitude demonstrating respect for diverse constituencies.
•    Must have the ability to juggle and prioritize multiple stories with different deadlines and manage relationships with external partners and contributors.
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
