When Worlds Collide
On this week’s World Music Show (3/9) I’m very excited or stoked, to embrace my Southern California roots, to showcase an interview I had with World Cafe host Talia Schlanger. Why interview another radio person?
Well, for one, she’s an awesome interviewer. Her style and ease at talking with musicians is something I aspire to. For another, the breadth of guests they get on the show is just outstanding. And lastly, they get to play all sorts of fantastic music and get incredible musical guests. So, that’s exactly why she’s a great person to talk with.
Plus, every so often I pull out my “show within a show” called A Different Spin in which I speak with interesting people--and not all relate to World Music.
In the first hour, Talia and I talk about some of the guests they’ve had on, such as Elvis Costello, David Byrne and even Dr. Demento. And we talk about technique in how to be relaxed with interviews and she also gives me a couple of Canadian artists to check out (Bonjay and Jeremy Dutcher).
I couldn’t be more thankful to her for taking some time out of her busy day to chat.
For hour two, I’ll unwrap the seal on some new music and celebrate International Women’s day. We’ll hear brand-spanking new tracks from Ana Tijoux, the band Kuwisiana, Rupa and the April Fishes and Ina Forsman. And we’ll hear from an Icelandic musician named Hafdis Huld who plays some incredible music in between taking care of her child and her chickens.
Also featured on this chunk of music will be some of my go-to tracks from Meklit, Bebe, Fantomaticos, Mbongwana Star and Jupiter & Okwess.
This week’s blog is short because, well, it’s been a busy week. So, tune into the World Music Show Saturday at 8pm to WCVE Music 93.1 or 107.3FM in Richmond or stream the show via this website. Follow me on Twitter @wcveworldmusic and on Facebook at The World Music Show on WCVE.
