Sailing Through Labor Pains
Listen. Like you, I realize that we’re now at the end of the summer, technically speaking. And while those of us who have kids may be happy to wave them off as they board the school bus and get back in the swing of things, I on the other hand lament the end of the summer. I feel like it went by too quickly and I didn’t soak up all the could be achieved.
What does this have to do with this week’s World Music Show? Well, nothing really. Except that I’m now writing this late Saturday afternoon--two hours until show time. This could be because things got out of hand last week with an impromptu getaway. Or it could be due to the fact that upon arriving home, we had to do the God-awful grocery refill at a few markets and get a gift for my daughter’s friend’s birthday which required a trip to THE MALL.
Needless to say, I still want to push through and give a quick head’s up as to what’s on the docket for the show--albeit, it’ll be a quick run through. And really, if you follow me on Twitter (@VPM_IanStewart) or on Facebook (The World Music Show on VPM), then you’ll get a preview via a little movie I whipped up to highlight who I’m playing.
So, if you’ve missed that, then, well, here’s a rundown.
We’ll dance around with music from KoKoKo!, Ibibio Sound Machine, Villalobos Brothers and Cineplexx.
We’ll get historic with some songs by Delgres, RAM 7 and um, that’s it. I’d tell you all about why these are historic, but pizza is in the oven and movie night is almost at hand.
For some beautiful sounds, we’ll from Alex Cuba, Vieux Farka Toure, Nina Miranda, Meklit and the Mexican singer Geo Equihua.
If you like to bop around or bang your head, then I’ll play some punk from Shonen Knife, some Afrobeat from Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra and the Cyprus band Monsieur Doumani.
For some awesome Latin-inspired Rock, Elvis Costello duets with La Marisoul, Maya Jupiter kicks butt on “New Girl in Town,” and local and rising musician Angelica Garcia will sing about Karma.
I hope this rundown and brief list helps you decide whether to tune in tonight. If not, maybe you can tune in next Saturday night, since the World Music Show airs every Saturday night from 8-10pm on VPM Music on 93.1 or 107.3FM or you can stream the show via this website, where lo and behold, you’ll also get to see live streaming track listings.
