The Grammy-nominated Chiara String Quartet plays by heart, in other words without the music! They are renowned for “bringing fresh excitement to traditional string quartet repertoire as well as for creating insightful interpretations of new music.” The ensemble is comprised of Rebecca Fisher and Hyeyung Yoon (violins), Jonah Sirota (viola) and Gregory Beaver (cello).

I recently spoke with three of the members (Hyeyung, Jonah and Greg) about their brand new release “Bartok by Heart. The Strad magazine says of this recording which includes the complete set of Bartok quartets “precision and involving vitality.” During our chat, we discussed how performing from memory sets their performances apart, their approach to new music commissions and how they balance their individual careers.

Enjoy the interview excerpts!
