President Donald Trump is holding a campaign rally at the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport on Friday. Virginia Republican Party Chairman Rich Anderson said he’s expecting a big turnout.

“Republican energy, enthusiasm is raising the rafters,” Anderson said in a press call.

Anderson predicted the event would likely exceed the commonwealth’s suggested 250-person cap on gatherings, part of Virginia’s Stage Three COVID-19 guidelines - but he says he’s not worried.

“Our very own governor has permitted huge, gargantuan numbers of people in the streets doing protests,” Anderson said.

Some reports suggest the campaign is hoping to reach voters in bordering North Carolina, with Virginia no longer considered a swing state in presidential elections.

Anderson says he sees Virginia as a battleground state in this election year, despite Biden consistently polling over Trump. A poll released Thursday from Christopher Newport University shows Joe Biden pulling in five percent more support than Trump among likely Virginia voters.
