Richmond Causes Delay in Election Certification

Delays in the Richmond Registrar’s Office review of ballots prevented the state elections board from certifying results for the 2020 general election.

The Virginia Board of Elections met Monday to finalize the state’s results, but Robert Brink, chairman of the Board, opened the meeting only to announce the Board’s plan to adjourn until Wednesday.

Results were originally due from localities last Tuesday, but several positive COVID-19 tests put most of the Richmond Registrar’s Office in quarantine and delayed the counting of some ballots.

The board did certify results in congressional races outside Richmond, but with the city yet to send an official tally of votes, the state had no choice but to delay its validation in statewide races as well as the 4th Congressional District.

The board says they expect Richmond’s results by Tuesday night.
