Visitors spent close to one billion dollars in Henrico county last year, the highest in the region and fifth highest in Virginia according to an annual study just released by the Virginia Tourism Corporation.

Tourism Supervisor Dawn Miller says it’s a plan that goes back years.

"Since we launched our tourism efforts back in 2012, it’s actually increased 29% from 746.5 million to almost a billion dollars, up to 963.5 million dollars."   The total reflects spending on food, lodging, transportation, entertainment, retail and other services.   And she says, sports are a big draw.   "We book 180 sports tournaments each year."   But she says they could use an indoor arena.   "We are getting requests for indoor tournaments and we can’t fill them."   After a land deal with Richmond International Raceway fell through this summer, the board has asked developers to come back with a new plan, and a specific site, next month.
